George Carlin on Indians

"...Now the Indians. I call them Indians because that's what they are. They're Indians. There's nothing wrong with the word Indian." "First of all, it's important to know that the word Indian does not derive from Columbus mistakenly believing he had reached India. India was not even called by that name in 1492; it was known as Hindustan."
"More likely, the word Indian comes from Columbus's description of the people he found here. He was an Italian, and did not speak or write very good Spanish, so in his written accounts he called the Indians, 'Una gente in Dios.' A people in God. In God. In Dios. Indians. It's a perfectly noble and respectable word."
"As far as calling them 'Americans' is concerned, do I even have to point out what an insult this is? ----- We steal their hemisphere, kill twenty or so million of them, destroy five hundred separate cultures, herd the survivors onto the worst land we can find, and now we want to name them after ourselves? It's appalling. Haven't we done enough damage? Do we have to further degrade them by tagging them with this repulsive name?...."
"You know, you'd think it would be a fairly simple thing to come over to this continent, commit genocide, eliminate the forests, dam up the rivers, build our malls and massage parlors, sell our blenders and whoopee cushions, poison ourselves with chemicals, and let it go at that. But no. We have to compound the insult."
"... I'm glad the Indians have gambling casinos now. It makes me happy that people are losing their rent money to the Indians. Maybe then Indians will get lucky and win their country back. Probably they wouldn't want it. Look at what we did to it."

March 15, '08......
WOW! Seems like a long time since we've been able to bring the newsletter up-to-date. Lots of things have been happening. Last summer was very busy with visits to Juneau, Ketchikan and Metlakatla. Donna even squeezed in a Cultural Camp for KIC.

The ANA Dictionary is in the final stages as 'drafts' have been sent out for input. By late summer there will a CD-ROM, hard copy and online capabilities for what has been produced, so far. Also, we are still working with Wilma Baines in Met. and Donna will be back in May (if scheduling goes right). She will be in Ketchikan at the same time to further our work with the elders on the NSF grant.

There has been several phone conferences with SHI concerning another grant to further some of the work all ready done and to create online curriculum and teacher training. We will keep you posted as to the progress. We're hoping to hear sometime in May or June. If everything goes well we will be looking for involvement in all of the communities (including the Seattle area) and those wishing to become teachers.

IN THE MEANTIME.....We are just about done (by the end of March) with a BRAND NEW CD-ROM that will really help everyone to learn and enjoy our language more. My Shila-gwaya has added music to our Song Section. We will be sending out some samples for feedback, very soon. What's really neat is it can be used as a PowerPoint Presentation for your groups. AND, THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST EDITION!

We are still working on our own "comphrehensive dictionary" and hope to have it done by late summer. It will be the biggest and most complete dictionary of Shm'algyack to-date!

We hope that you are using and enjoying our site. We encourage comments and suggestions and hope that you would help us to let everyone know how to find us. We live in a technology based world and we, as 'Tsmshians, need to take advantange of it.

Until next time, 'DOYCKSHN, Without you there would be nothing!

Sha'aamdza waan,
Hukdsab & Shuguyna

By the way.........

OUR LEADERS DO HAVE A SERVANTS HEART!

Norma Jean Dunne had a Christmas Tea and needed a few men to serve the ladies on Sunday the 18th.
They served tea and brought the food around.
l/r...Bob Hamilton, Walter Soboleff Jr. and Senator Kookesh.

CHECK IT OUT!

We hope you use and enjoy them.

Heart of the 'Tsmshian

Terri Burr, a 'Tsmshian living in Ketchikan, AK, has formed a dance group called
With assistance from her mother Norma Wilson and consultation with Donna May, she has recorded (on CD) the songs, using Shm'algyack, for the explicit use of teaching her dancers. Even though these songs are NOT for sale or use by anyone other than her dance group, she has given us permission to provide some samples.
