Sorry to ask this in the guest book. On the front page to your website you say that of the first
50 people converts who went with Duncan - ...vowed to give up their language.
What is the source for this statement as my research indicates just the opposite. Duncan spoke Tsimshian fluently and only of a few of his younger converts had any English at all.
Five years after the move from Simpson to Metlakatla BC, it was recorded by Dean Ed. Cridge that the people were reluctant to speak in English.
If they had agreed to give up Tsimshian, why was it used in the schools and church and why would they not want to speak it the visiting clergy?
My research on the life of one such family (who remained behind at Metlakatla in 1887) illustrates just the opposite - the language was in use and strong up until the early 1900's.
If you have further information which could clarify this point, I would appreciate hearing from you.
With best wishes,
Maureen Atkinson in Terrace BC
Nda wila waan, Maureen,
We thank you for your interest in our web site. Your question about the language on our History page is one that has been of great concern to all of us.
There have been many stories and strong feelings about why the language was not passed down to each generation. The passage you are referring to comes from the book,
The Tsimshian, edited by Margaret Seguin (page 8-par 2) and concerns a group of Kitka'ata.
Donna May's nauh, Martha Sumner, whom we have dedicated our work to, was one of the original pioneers that came to New Metlakatla from B.C. and spoke nothing
but Shim-al-gyack (one of the reasons that Donna May is fluent to this day). It was used by all of the pioneers and some of their family members.
However, it was discouraged because of their effort to assimilate into the English world.
I hope this helps to shed some light on our statement which we could discuss for many hours. As you have seen by our web site it has been our primary goal to keep the language alive in any way we can.

I am of Tshimsian decent, from the Raven Clan. Anna Pike was my great, great, great, great (you know
what I mean) grandmother. I am a decendant of the Rosler family.
I appreciate that this sight is available as I know very little about my heritage and today I found this and a lot more information! It has been a good day!
A few years ago it seemed as though I couldn't find any information about my heritage and today I seem to be finding quite a lot. I have a cousin who recently went to Metlakatla
to work in the clinic there and now I have seen pictures which makes me feel closer to my past. I hope to visit one day and bring my children so that they may see and feel where
there ancestors came from. This has been a long journey which is far from over as well as an emotional one. Although I am taking baby steps and learning inch by inch about the culture
I came from I feel so connected and that I belong to a people and a place even though I have never been there.
Thank you so much!

Hey, I'm Kirstie and I come from Metlakatla, Alaska. It's beautiful island, and who ever hasn't been here it's a great place.
So yeah.
I read some of the other sign in people's messages and I forgot to give even a little bit of info. I was born in Ketchikan, but have lived here in "New" Metlakatla for 13 years, as long as I have been alive.
I'm related to Sarah Booth, our oldest and most respected elder.
My father is full Tsimpshian so I must be alot, and I'm a girl obviously and I'm very lucky to be able to live on this island, and I'm part of the eagle clan, So now you know a little but about me.

Slainte Tony & Donna:
Thankye verra much for e-mailimg me and welcoming me to ye site which I think is most grand!
I am glad to know that ye are trying to instill the old language in the young ones and even those that are grown and want to learn the old language...
My culture as ye most likely know by now is Irish and like the many tribes since the 16,17 and 1800's was banded by white missionaries just like like my
orefathers people, the catholic church did the same to the gaelic speaking people of Ireland and like ye are trying to bring back the old language too!
Correction...it was not the catholic's but the British that wanted to annialate the gaelic language along with song's and dance....the british starved my people
during the british invasion and tryied to colonize Ireland under british rule but that only lasted a couple 100 yrs so like my people they went thru what the many tribes went thru, maybe that is why
I lived the native culture for over 20 yrs but finally embraced my own post 9/11 which is when I lost my uncle and nephew when the 2nd tower collpased and like my irish brothers and sisters
am trying to learn the gaelic lanuage which I hope to teach my own children, tis be grand if they were to speak Tsimshian and Gaelic!
Have a wonderful day,Irish
May the wind alway's be at ye back!

Been a few day's since I last posted,just a quick greeting from Watertown,NY
My daughter Kerry Atkinson will be coming to New York this August, she will be 18,whew I'm feeling a wee bit ancient, lol, anyway I will be taking Kerry to her first Irish Cultural Festival, pretty much
like the Potlatch, there will be story telling, crafts,Irish food, step dancers from out of Ireland and all over the states, they will be competeing for the National Trophy and the International Trophy.
Like the Alaskan tribes the Irish also have clans, mine is the Sheild Lion and my children with the exception of my youngest are of the Raven Clan,my oldest daughter Satoko was adopted into the
Raven clan,a proud moment for me:O)
Satoko's best friend from Metlakatla is Forest Haven and right now she is in New Zealand, they too have tribes there,if ye have not seen the movie (Whale Rider) then
I suggest ye watch it,its a verra moving picture, just be sure to have tissue near by!

I was so amazed at this web sight. My Tsimshian clan is the

my grandmother was Dorthy Mckinnie (nee Hayward). I grew up
far away from Metlekatla where both my mother and my
grandmother grew up and though they and some other
relatives have told me many stories I do not remember
hearing much of the language spoken. My uncle Rex gave me
my own "name" not a real one but one for me and my grandma
and mom would always call us kids skookums (don't know if
the spelling is right on that). That is all I ever heard
until I found this site. It makes me so excited to hear my,

I posted back in april 2003, here to post again,
I continue to learn about culture, and i have been a part of my clan structure here in sitka, I am of the Kaagwaantaan, box house, my fathers clan is the killerwhale, my grand
mother is Pauline Dundas, and her mother is Fanny Haldane, I remember both of them and I miss them dearly. It is always great to be proud, and I am proud to be both tsimshian, and tlingit.
Oftentimes I wonder about my friends and family in metlakatla, it is good to keep in touch so I call family every other day. I really miss living in Metlakatla, I do hope to spend a summer
there in the coming years. I want to be a part of our living culture and would love to see it grow some more. I really get it out there and tell people where I grew up, people ask about metlakatla,
and i tell them how much our families love us.
I should really cut this short, so if any of you tsimshian out there want to contact me, send me a message to my email, or my yahoo, I would be more than happy to talk with

I'm doing some research on my Native culture.
My Great Gandfather I found was Blackcrow from Kitsum Kalum and my Great Grandmother was Blackfish. My mom was born in Terrace.
I'm not sure what line the clan goes down so if you'd like to email me about that, that would be great. This is an informative page.
If you have any info on these clans that you'd be willing to give that would be great as well, thank you.

Hello, Our family is originally from Wrangell Alaska. I spent some time In Ketchikan and owned the first Good Humor
ice cream business there in the early 1980's, my mother worked for Cape Fox, was their first employee, Stella Hanson.
I'm writing you because we are in the printing business and I would like to talk with your marketing and advertising manager about our print media products. Our product prices are very
reasonable, premium paper stock, and because we are in Oregon there is no tax charge. We design and print posters, postcards, brochures, mailers, newspaper inserts, presentation folders,
door hangers for campaigns and hotels, business cards, and cards of all sizes. Our goal is to give Native people the best print media representation out there, and for a reasonable price.
Please call or email. I'll be on the road this week and can be reached by cell at 503-871-2271 or call our office to leave a message at 503-769-1118. Look forward to hearing from you.

Currently I am finishing up on my Associate of Arts Degree and I
will be starting my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Communications at the beginning of the new year. I came across your s. We come from one of the most power tribes in the North American Region.
I'm half Tsimshian...some day I would like to continue on with the language and be given a name from the elders. I have been taught the art from some of the greatest artists I've known.
I would like to keep this a tradition within my family and hope they continue this as well. Growing up as a youth in Metlakatla, Alaska I would go and visit with my grandfather the late
Ira C. Booth and he would tell the stories he was told as a youth. He would speak the language and then translate it into english. I've learned a lot from him. I only wish that there were more
like him out there. To teach is one thing but to learn is one of the greatest experiences I have come to enjoy in my young adulthood.
Thank you.

I am an american citizen living abroad. I know little about my own background becasue it is rather complicated.
My father is originally from Spain, my mother a born German. My own children have a heritage to look back upon and can pass it on to their children, I never could . I find it so very important that a
culture such as yours with such a history is upheld. The Shim-al-gyack language is a beautiful one, I can say this because I have heard many different languages and speak German ( a harsh, cold language),
next to English. I think that learning a new language is a new step for me and why not learn one of the first languages of North America? I have started reading anything and everything that
I could find about your culture and have even found Tsimshian artists with their work here in Germany! Now, when I tell my children about the real culture of America, it´s not about the one
you see on television, it´s about the countries first and real people. They have learned so much about Europe and of course Germany, as well. Since we are leaving here shortly and I am finally
going home (back to the U.S. after all these years) my children can at least say that they know a little about a true and old culture. In Germany, the people often smile over the fact that they
have such an old culture and the Americans don´t. They sometimes forget that there was a much older culture ( I read that the first Tsimhians go back 11,000 years!) in North America.
I would just like to thank you for bringing a bit of your culture to not only me, but to so many interested people around the world. The website is so great, please keep up the great work!
Sending you my greatest respect,
Sincerely,
Dennice Vogel

Hello:
My father was born in Ketchikan AK so many years ago, 1910 or 1911, he changed over a long time ago.
He spoke French and was related to the Metis General, Gabriel Dumont.
There was a big war in Canada in 1845, which the French Metis lost. Some fled in many directions, others stayed.
My father's name was Pete James Thompson, I can remember him calling me "Petite Mikositloo", he said it was "Little Red Wolf" in trader language "Michif",
he said Cree and French. When he would discipline me, he would say firmly and loudly, "I am the big Gibuu in this house and you will do as I say!"
He used to say other things I did not understand, among some was a "moomsh"word when I tried to lie and he knew it.
I'm 61 now and the years have gone by, mother is gone, family contacts were lost in Canada, I was adopted in my teen years, and so it goes.
Its great to see some words that I remember so long ago. I'm done talking.
